This post tells you how to put a permanent stop to all of your followers getting bombarded with comment follow-ups if they comment on your blog

Sharp Little Pencil

Sorry, poem later – first, help for ALL my WordPress buddies!

We have located where that sneaky unemployed blockhead GWB hid the comment box check that has everyone on WordPress steamed.

On your Dashboard, left column, click “Settings.”
Under “Settings” menu, click “Discussions.”
On “Discussions” page, scroll WAY, WAY down… to just above Avatars section. You’ll find some checked boxes, including “Allow: Follow Comments.”

Uncheck that box.

Nobody really follows someone else’s comments, in my experience. But clicking this means that option (if someone DOES want updates on a comment they made) will disappear. That just means if they are hungry for your feedback, they will take the time to come back to your blog. Never happened to me because when there is a juicy comment, I copy my response to a personal email to the commenter and we continue the discussion there.

Hope this helps. And, as someone says…

i don’t know that it stops emails related to comments you make on others’ blogs; but it should stop your own blog from dumping email on people. if we each do this, it should stop the deluge. thanks….

  2. Reblogged this on Lady Barefoot Baroness and commented:
If we all would change our settings with this aesome info there would be less stress to blogging comments filling our email box up.

  3. But, Kate — I love your follow-up comments! If you do this, we’ll have to email about our blogs! Why not just let everyone uncheck the box? We’ll start remembering before long, just like I used to have to remember to “check” it. Not having an option is where this goes . . .

  4. Bless you for this. at first I wondered why I was getting all the follow up comments as its automatically generated another improvement which I think is not needed as I didnt see the box was ticked unless we unticked it.. .. Now I can unclick my own follow up comment box. Thank you for reblogging. I already went to Sharp Little Pencils post .. xxx ~Sue

as i said it stops your comments from getting dumped into others’ inboxes. to stop others’ comments threads from getting dumped into your inbox you have to unclick the tiny box below where you comment on their blog OR cancel it in i think the comment thread from your dashboard. i have already forgotten what that instruction was….

Thank you Kate for all this wealth of information. YOU are awesome! I was getting a tad frustrated when I would check my emails and it took me such a long time to go through it all. Of course still being a newbie I didn’t know what was going on?? I have fixed mine and I am ‘happy in the face’. hugs. Renee 🙂 (I did read “sharp little pencil” post)

Kate, thank you for getting the word out. I wish someone knew why some bloggers were commenting on blogs and having their comments end up in spam.
