“I don’t believe you have to be better than everybody else. I believe you have to be better than you ever thought you could be. [Ken Venturi]” Now isn’t that a great perspective? One of my professors in college sat me down for a talk one day. I was feeling like a loser because it seemed as though everyone was doing better at everything than I was.In many respects they were, it wasn’t my imagination. I was having a very difficult time. She told me that all I could do was to run my OWN race the best I could. She explained that despite what messages the world gave me, I was really only in competition with myself. The rewards. recognition, and advancements pale in comparison to God’s rewards.
Then she gave me a perspective like Ken’s quote above. She told me to push my own self to maximize my gifts and talents~and to always do it for the betterment of others. She told me if I did that, no matter what the immediate results happen to be, I would never actually fail. I said that I could already see that many were way ahead of me and I might not ever catch up. She laughed and knowingly asked if I had ever run on a high school or college running track. Of course I had [not well, but I HAD done it– but only on my own, never on a team]. She asked if I had ever been on the inside track and others on the outer tracks. ‘Who was ahead of who at those times?”
That gave me pause; although it looked as though they were ahead of me, it could be an illusion. It’s merely a different lane on the same track. And even if it is not an illusion, God doesn’t head us to the finish line until we are ready, at long last, and I mean truly ready, to leap into HIS arms as we cross the glorious finish line. But we MUST push ourselves to gain the strength to complete our very own race. We cannot run a race on a track a million miles away. We run our own race; in our own lane…..What am I (and what are each of us) called to do, then? Keep trying, keep running, keep believing. Look how happy the guy in the photo below is. I pray that you have moments today that feel like that; if not today, I pray you have them so very soon.
Press onward….God’s loving arms will be there to enfold you at the blessed finish line.
