What’s the longest you’ve ever walked in a single day? Daily post topic 344
Write about what happened, how far you walked, and whether it was by choice, or something happened that forced you to travel differently than you expected.
When I was in high school I was very involved in social justice types of organizations and projects. I was fully determined to make the world a better place. It was my clarion call, my reason for “doing”. Thus, I was involved, for one thing in the “Walk for Human Development”. It was also called the Hunger Hike. Participants got people to pledge money per mile. You then did the hike on the day of it. (In the location that I did it, the group (thousands of people by the way) it was a Sunday in the spring. You brought your form with you, and every few miles you got the form stamped. At the end of the “hike”—which wound it’s way through our town—you got it stamped again. Then you took your stamped card to the people that pledged. You collected the money and brought it to the organization. They used the money for food for the poor—both here and abroad.
The first year I did the Hunger Hike it was a 35 mile hike. I walked every step. Oh my, at the end I was in agony. My friend and I drove home, she dropped me off and I nearly crawled into the house. I wanted to stay home the next day. Dad said “nope—extracurriculars, no matter how noble, do not trump education”. Gotta love the Greatest Generation. They were always so doggone right!
So yeah—35 miles in just a few hours is the longest walk.
