What’s a food you’ve always wanted to try? But have chickened out on trying? (lol, chickened.)
This is a fairly easy topic for me to blog on. I grew up in MN. During my childhood there and in Chicago in HS, we did not have spicy food. I joke that salt and pepper in the same meal would have been adventurous. It wasn’t quite that bland. But I never even had a taco until I was a junior in HS! So when it comes to foods that I chicken out on trying, it would be super-spicy food. i have certainly had some Mexican food that is medium spicy—and then I need a LOT of water standing by. My forehead sweats and my scalp feels itchy.
But the type of food that I have not tried is any kind of Thai food. I have heard it is extremely spicy. Thus I chicken out, because if something tastes burningly spicy to my mouth, I do not enjoy it and I cannot even truly taste it.
Now, when we were kids, one of my brothers continually nagged my dad to buy chocolate covered ants. I would protest and complain and say that sounded gross. One Saturday, my dad, my brothers, and I were doing the grocery shopping. My brother started in on the chocolate covered ants again—just nagging and nagging. I guess my dad had had enough. He headed down the specialty foods aisle. He bought…no not chocolate covered ants. He bought fried grasshoppers.
When we sat down to lunch we each were required to have at least one. My argument was that my brother had wanted bugs, not me. My dad’s counter was that if I was some hotshot businesswoman or ambassador and was in some foreign country where something bizarre was served, I would be expected to graciously eat it with no fuss and a lot of grace and decorum. He said “now is the time to practice”.
So I ate…one…..it tasted disgusting! I have never even wanted to try any other kind of bug or worm!!
