What film have you seen more than any other?. Sorry folks, but this is a three-way tie. It really is. The films are: The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, and Casablanca. All three of these films are outstanding. The Wizard of Oz has been on TV almost every year my entire year. Throughout my childhood and young adult years my brothers and I would watch it every year. I have continued that tradition most (but not all) of my life thus far. And I STILL think she should stay with scarecrow. I was so swept away by the magic of the movie that it wasn’t until my adult years that I could really see that her travel companions in OZ were the farm hands. And–to my amazement, the guard in OZ was also the wizard and the guy from the traveling fair. I am, I guess quite naive and impressionable ;-).
In high school I read the book Gone with the Wind, and the movie had been re-released in theaters. I saw it in the theater after I read the book. (The movie is wonderful and epic; the book is even better). It was EXTREMELY frustrating to me that Scarlett was so darn fixated on that idiot Ashley….and yet during my dating years, for so many years I dated guys that would never really be interested in my true spirit and self. They were Ashleys. But I did marry my Rhett [but he was neither a scoundrel nor a blockade runner–but he was strong, inspiring, and madly in love with me—and I with him].
The other one is Casablanca. It is on cable TV regularly. We seem to come across it most of the times it is on. We sometimes vow that we are going to watch only until the casino scene, or only until after the scene where the patrons try to beat the Nazis in the sing-off…or until ….or until ‘here’s lookin at you kid’ or until ’round up the usual suspects’but we are invariably there until after ‘Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship’.
I must say that I think Casablanca speaks to a nobility and heroic character and mindset that is sorely needed today. Despite what fans of Citizen Kane may say, I think Casablanca was the best movie ever. For movies to be memorable to me it must inspire me. Technical aspects alone are never enough. Therefore: Rosebud be damned, We’ll always have Paris.
It is a theme in keeping with my spirit because i am a perennial optimist.
