Does anyone remember the song starry starry night by don mclean? i was thinking about that song when i looked out my balcony window last night. the sky was so … well.. starry! Anyway, i began to think this morning about tiny things. The little girl that lives next door to me just loves tiny things….little stickers, tiny purses, polly pockets, little tiny books….do you remember loving tiny things? I do! From stacking cups to arms full of little bangles to tiny bottles of perfume…oh it made me so happy to play with them. I’d endlessly line them up and arrange them a zillion different ways. Today when I was letting the dog out into the back yard I noticed how pretty the flagstones next to my patio looked.
I thought to myself–“gosh i should notice these things more often” 🙂 !
Today I resolve to notice something in my own little environment that I usually overlook in my busy world. I want to try to notice something at least once an hour. What will it be? The pattern the sun makes as it shines through the half-open blinds? That’s a good one.
Perhaps if I looked at the world around me the way an artist would while looking for something to draw would look at it…..they might notice not only the 3 candles on the mantle, but the spacing, the shadows, and the envelope stuck behind the candles.
What is my purpose in noticing all of these things? Joy comes from God, and is inside each of us, waiting to be released. I am accustomed to noticing sunrises, sunsets, and stars. Seeing those things generally makes me feel so good! Perhaps a way for me to continue that joy in small things (thanks to Ava next door) is to form the habit of NOTICING. If I notice it in my own little home, perhaps I will then easily form the habit of noticing little, lovely things in each person I encounter. (Such as the way someone’s face lights up when they talk about someone they love). Anyway, that is my plan for at least the morning. I will be sure to let you know how it goes…..I am thinking it will make me glow with joy. Today, I would really like to glow with joy….after all, I am…a perennial optimist.

I Am Becoming the Me I Was Born To BeAs I journey through this part of my life I have discovered my next mountain. The key is to be the me I want to be in the world, as my gift back to God.
