Postaday topic #90: Pick something that annoys you and redesign how it works

Are you sick of the long lines at the DMV? Bothered by waiting in the doctors office without being told how long you have to wait? Pick something that annoyed you yesterday, and describe how you would redesign or change it to make your annoyances go away. Could be a device, a machine, a process, a place, anything.

What bothers me is long waits at a doctor’s office or medical lab. This is what i would do to solve it. Create software for the doc/medical lab. The appointments would be programmed into the software. As the day progresses, the software adjusts the appointment times to fit how the appointments are actually running. For example, if the calendar set up assumed 15 minute appointments and they are taking 35 minutes, the calendar adjusts, and tweets/ alerts are sent out showing the new estimated times. Each patient can go online/smartphone in with a special code. The software would continue to estimate the new actual appointment time. The patients could then adjust their office arrival time accordingly. Furthermore, the software would show what % of the time the doc actually sees patients, for example at 10am on weds for a 10am appt vs 10am on thurs for a 10am appt….in a fashion similar to data on airlines for on time for specific flight#s historically.

Granted, this only solves the ‘hanging around forever at the doctor’s office’ piece of it. it still ends up not solving the ‘how long do i set aside for a 20 min doctor’s appt’. But it’s a start.
