Topic #32 Are you an optimist, a pessimist, or something else? I am not only an optimist, I am a perennial optimist. I am a person who sees the jar as half-full, looks for the pony hidden in the pile of manure, and the one who says tomorrow will be better. We wll find an answer to our problems, etc. Now that does not mean I am always ‘little Mary Sunshine’. However, you can tell if I have been under too much stress for too long. I get cranky, and start talking like Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh. I begin to believe things will always be awful for us financially. The secret is that even if they are going to be lousy financially, we can still find a way to be happy. St. Paul tells us to rejoice in the Lord always. Not just if you are having a fabulous day….always. My optimism keeps me centered, grounded, yet dancing. [figuratively anyway]. Pessimistic people drain me dry after awhile. I have reached a point in my life where I cannot keep lifting up the pessimistic. It is like swimming up to a drowning person. Sometimes the drowning person panics and pushes his/her rescuer underwater and tries to drown him/her. When I deal too frequently with a pessimistic person I begin to think negatively and I begin to see the world as a dark, depressing, dreary place…..that is when i know that I need to back off, re-group and restore myself.
I am at my core optimistic….I am a perennial optimist.
